NEWS FROM THE GATEACRE SOCIETY (Nov.2012):

Our next meeting:

CHILD LABOUR IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY
An illustrated talk
by Anna Alexander on
Sunday 25th November
at 2 pm

in Gateacre Chapel,
Gateacre Brow L25 3PB

Anna Alexander is a former Committee member of the Gateacre Society who, for her M.A. degree in Local and Regional History, has been researching child labour in Warrington 1810-1845.

The talk will look at how childhood was viewed by people in the nineteenth century, and why young children could be found working as chimney sweeps or in coal mines, in cotton mills and pin manufactories. Reference will be made to the role played by apprenticeships, education and religion in their lives. The role of the workhouse will be briefly examined, as will the part played by philanthropists in making children's lives more bearable.

Warrington was one of the towns visited by parliamentary investigators in the 1830s and 1840s, when two Employment Commissions looked into the prevalence and effects of child labour across the country. Anna will use examples from the town to illustrate her talk.

ALL WELCOME. Admission free of charge (Donations invited)
