LIVERPOOL'S LINKS TO THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
1861-65
The American Civil War was fought 150 years ago, and Liverpool was involved in a number of different ways. Not only was it the home of the unofficial embassy of the Southern Confederacy, but it was also the hub of a 'spy network' supplying intelligence to the Northern Union. Ships such as the CSS Alabama (pictured) were built on the Mersey as blockade runners aiming to keep the Southern ports open. Michael Lawson has been interested in the topic for many years, having carried out research for the American Civil War Historical Society which has staged re-enactments in Liverpool and devised a 'Civil War trail' in and around the city.
