ABBOTS LEA
Beaconsfield Road
A planning/listed building consent application (ref. 12F/2874 & 12L/2875) was submitted in November to demolish the former stable block belonging to Abbots Lea, and replace it by a new classroom block for the Special School which now occupies the site. The Listed mansion - which is to remain intact - was built in 1862 for Liverpool shipowner John Bushby, and was subsequently the home of Widnes soap manufacturer William Winwood Gossage and Bootle dyer and cleaner Sir Benjamin Sands Johnson. Wealthy men such as these relied on private horse-drawn transport to reach their places of business. We therefore believe that the stable block is an important feature of the Listed Building, and deserves to be renovated/converted rather than demolished. A decision on the application is to be made by the City Council's Planning Committee on 29th January 2013.
