{"id":4496,"date":"2024-07-10T23:29:15","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T22:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gateacresociety.co.uk\/?page_id=4496"},"modified":"2024-07-11T16:22:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T15:22:22","slug":"gateacre-institute","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gateacresociety.co.uk\/?page_id=4496","title":{"rendered":"Gateacre Institute (old Gateacre C of E School)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Built in 1838<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1877, Andrew Barlcay Walker had provided land in Halewood Road for a new Church of England school, and converted the old school building in Grange Lane into a reading room, later to become what is now the Gateacre Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1882 it was partly used by the Local Board for meetings and offices. In 1887, to mark Queen Victoria&#8217;s Jubilee, Sir Andrew Barclay Walker set up a trust giving The Gateacre Institution to the people of Gateacre to provide the opportunity for social and intellectual meeting and improvement, with a covenant that it be used as a working mans club. With the passing of time it changed to a social club and now offers membership to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentioned in the &#8220;Other engagements played&#8221; section of&nbsp;<em>The Beatles Live!<\/em>&nbsp;book is this venue. The engagement occurred at some point during 1957-59 when the Quarry Men (or the &#8220;Japage 3&#8221; as they called themselves in late 1958 &#8211; early 1959) made a number of appearances arranged through friends and contacts.
