In 1877, Andrew Barlcay Walker had provided land in Halewood Road for a new Church of England school, and converted the old school building in Grange Lane into a reading room, later to become what is now the Gateacre Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1882 it was partly used by the Local Board for meetings and offices. In 1887, to mark Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, Sir Andrew Barclay Walker set up a trust giving The Gateacre Institution to the people of Gateacre to provide the opportunity for social and intellectual meeting and improvement, with a covenant that it be used as a working mans club. With the passing of time it changed to a social club and now offers membership to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mentioned in the “Other engagements played” section of The Beatles Live!<\/em> book is this venue. The engagement occurred at some point during 1957-59 when the Quarry Men (or the “Japage 3” as they called themselves in late 1958 – early 1959) made a number of appearances arranged through friends and contacts.
