An ILLUSTRATED TALK by Rev. Dr D. BEN REES
Father Nugent, born in Liverpool in 1822, was a Catholic priest who died in 1905 and is commemorated by a statue in St John's Gardens. The inscription reads: 'Apostle of Temperance, Protector of the Orphan Child, Consoler of the Prisoner, Reformer of the Criminal, Saviour of Fallen Womanhood, Friend of All in Poverty and Affliction', which sums up the life and work of one of the most famous figures in Victorian Liverpool.
Dr Ben Rees is an authority on the city's social history, and as many members will know he is an eloquent speaker. This meeting will be held in the Chapel Hall, Sandfield Road, Liverpool L25, starting at 8 p.m.
