Our November meeting:
THE FOLKS WHO LIVED
ON THE HILL
An illustrated talk by Beryl Plent
on Sunday 20th November, at 2 pm
in Gateacre Chapel, Gateacre Brow L25
Throughout the 19th century the high ground, south of Liverpool, was a favoured location for merchant princes to build country mansions. Commanding splendid views of the Mersey estuary and beyond they were still within travelling distance of the town. An example was Woolton Hill, where the sons and daughters of well-known families such as Tate, Forwood and Hornby grew up.
Many of the residences of these wealthy Victorians have gone, so we have to look at the portraits and pictures that survive for an insight into their lives. This illustrated talk is a follow-up to Beryl's last which was entitled 'The Houses on the Hill'. Photographs from the Gateacre Society's archive collection will be included.
