ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2012

The Gateacre Society's Annual General Meeting will be held in Gateacre Unitarian Chapel, Gateacre Brow, L25 3PB on SUNDAY 14th OCTOBER, starting at 2pm. Please come along and hear what we've been doing during the past 12 months; and tell us what you think we should be doing in the future. If you'd like to play a more active part in the running of the Society - perhaps you are new to the area, or newly retired - we shall be especially pleased to see you, as we do need new faces on our Committee. If you are not currently a member of the Society, you are welcome to come and find out more.

The short 'business' part of the meeting will be followed by a talk by Beryl Plent about the Gill Family archives. This fascinating collection of documents was presented to the Society in 1979 by a member of the Gill family: the Liverpool cotton brokers who once lived in Gateacre, at Knotty Cross and Lower Lee. We have recently discovered that Mr Sandy Chapple Gill, a prominent Liverpool lawyer, is a descendant of the same family, and we feel that it would be appropriate to return some of the documents to him for the family's use and safe keeping. The artefacts concerned - including wills, letters and photographs - will be on display at our meeting, and Beryl will tell us the story behind them.

As usual, the A.G.M. will conclude with complimentary refreshments which all are invited to share. This will give an opportunity for members to chat informally with each other and with the Society's Committee.

The revised plans for the St Gabriel's Convent 'care village' (see the May
and July Newsletters) indicate a one-third reduction in the number of accommodation units, and a much-improved layout. While we regret the loss of greenspace and have concerns about the likely increase in traffic on Beaconsfield Road, we welcome the proposed refurbishment of the listed building and its landscape features. We have not, therefore, submitted an objection to the new proposals.
