NEWS FROM THE GATEACRE SOCIETY (Nov.2012):

SIGNPOST UPDATE

The 1897 Diamond Jubilee signpost was put back in position in Belle Vale Road in mid-September, after the completion of restoration work by Enterprise-Liverpool and specialist contractors. Following consultation with the Council's Conservation Team, the decision had been taken to go for 'minimal intervention' in terms of the salvaged timber panels; hence the natural wood finish which has been adopted for the signpost. A consequence, unfortunately, is that the inscriptions on the panels - giving distances to various places on the road side, and commemorating William Hall Walker's gift on the other side - are now very difficult to read. We are hoping that this can be remedied before too long.

NEWS UPDATE, 27th NOVEMBER 2012:
Following a site meeting involving the contractor, Council officers, Councillor Claire Glare and a representative of the Gateacre Society, which took place on 20th November, the signpost panels have now been removed by the contractor, with the intention of restoring the lettering using gold leaf rather than gold paint.
