DO YOU REMEMBER GATEACRE STATION IN THE 1960s?
In our March 2011 Newsletter we mentioned that a BBC TV researcher was asking about the 'campaign' which had kept Gateacre Station open in the 1960s, post-Beeching. One of our members responded by giving us a 'Buses' magazine article (May 1969). This stated that the delay in closing the Gateacre-Liverpool Central railway line was in fact the result of an objection by Liverpool Corporation, who hoped that the line would eventually become part of an 'outer loop' service and meanwhile claimed that it would not be practical for them to provide a replacement bus service.
Now we have been asked the same question by someone else, who is convinced that there was indeed a local anti-closure campaign - possibly led by a Mr Prendergast. Does anyone remember this?

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF GATEACRE
Spring planting in the village has been organised once again by the Friends of Gateacre, who had a Clean Up Day on 9th March. FOG meetings take place monthly at the Gateacre Institute, Grange Lane, the next meetings being on Wednesdays 20th March, 17th April and 15th May at 7.15 pm. Newcomers are always welcome.
Future plans include an event on Saturday 14th September - in conjunction with the Gateacre Society, the Woolton Society, Woolton in Bloom and other organisations - as part of the Heritage Open Days weekend. In November, to mark the centenary of the absorption of the Much Woolton and Little Woolton Urban Districts into the City of Liverpool, a Quiz Night on a historical theme is planned.
