NEWS FROM THE GATEACRE SOCIETY (May 2014):

Our next meeting:

THE LIVERPOOL OVERHEAD RAILWAY
An illustrated talk
by Michael Murphy
on Monday 2nd June
at 7.30 p.m.

in Gateacre Chapel,
Gateacre Brow,
Liverpool L25 3PB

Mike Murphy is a retired history teacher who has spoken to us before on a variety of different topics. This time we have asked him to talk about the Overhead Railway, which he describes as "a unique institution and piece of civil engineering".

Why was it necessary? How was it possible to build such a daring structure? Why did it close down?

Mike will answer these questions, and talk about the railway's operation, its strengths and weaknesses, and some of the people involved.

ALL WELCOME - Admission free - Donations invited
