NEWS FROM THE GATEACRE SOCIETY (May 2015):

An illustrated talk by
Dr Donna Jackson
on Monday 1st June
at 7.30pm in
Gateacre Chapel,
Gateacre Brow
L25 3PB

Dr Donna Jackson earned her PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2002 and is now a Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Chester. Her research focuses upon American foreign policy towards the developing world during the Cold War - but she has also developed an interest in local heritage. Her teaching at Chester includes a six-week section on Beatles heritage in Liverpool.

Donna's talk will examine the legacy of the Beatles as presented at significant tourist destinations in Liverpool, including the Cavern, Penny Lane, St Peter's Church Hall in Woolton, and Strawberry Field in Beaconsfield Road. The history, legacy and heritage of The Beatles forms a major part of Liverpool's tourist industry, and the impact of tourism on these 'must see' locations for Beatles fans will be discussed. The talk will also cover key themes and issues such as 'authenticity' and 'aura', in relation to the way in which Beatles history is presented and managed.
