The Bear and Staff on Gateacre Brow is one of the oldest surviving licensed houses in the area. It can be traced back until at least 1747 when it was the house of William Davies. In 1773 it was shown as the Bear and Ragged Staff, which was the heraldic emblem of the Earls of Warwick.
