Gateacre Institute (old Gateacre C of E School)

Built in 1838

In 1877, Andrew Barlcay Walker had provided land in Halewood Road for a new Church of England school, and converted the old school building in Grange Lane into a reading room, later to become what is now the Gateacre Institute.

In 1882 it was partly used by the Local Board for meetings and offices. In 1887, to mark Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, Sir Andrew Barclay Walker set up a trust giving The Gateacre Institution to the people of Gateacre to provide the opportunity for social and intellectual meeting and improvement, with a covenant that it be used as a working mans club. With the passing of time it changed to a social club and now offers membership to everyone.

Mentioned in the “Other engagements played” section of The Beatles Live! book is this venue. The engagement occurred at some point during 1957-59 when the Quarry Men (or the “Japage 3” as they called themselves in late 1958 – early 1959) made a number of appearances arranged through friends and contacts. The precise date of this performance(s) are likely lost forever.
