OUR TEA TOWEL

In 2012, more than thirty years after our last Gateacre Village tea towel was commissioned, we ordered a new version from the same Liverpool manufacturers (Davies Publicity, a.k.a. Intaglobe Ltd).

The new towel portrays a selection of Gateacre landmarks. It measures 78cm x 46cm, is in FULL COLOUR, and features the distinctive images of Liverpool photographer Derek Hyamson.

The tea towel is on sale, price £4, at all our meetings and events. It can also be supplied by mail order (P & P £1.50 for any quantity). Please contact us for further information.

OUR BOOK OF OLD PHOTOGRAPHS

Gateacre & Belle Vale (‘Britain in Old Photographs’ series) by Beryl Plent and Mike Chitty. Published by The History Press in October 2009. 128-page paperback, 235×165 mm, ISBN 978 0 7524 5069 8

Compiled on behalf of the Gateacre Society, this volume contains over 200 black-and-white images, together with informative captions, which give an insight into the social and architectural history of Gateacre, Belle Vale, Netherley and Woolton Hill during the past three centuries.

The photographs – many of which have never before been published – cover a wide range of subjects. They include well-known local landmarks such as the Wilson Memorial Fountain, the Black Bull, the Jubilee bust of Queen Victoria, Gateacre Brewery, the Unitarian Chapel, St Stephen’s Church and Gateacre Grange, as well as ‘lost’ buildings like Strawberry Field (made famous by the Beatles), The Priory, Gorsey Cop Farm, Belle Vale Hall, Gateacre Station, Lee Hall and Netherley Waterworks.

The book is arranged geographically, with separate chapters devoted to Grange Lane, Gateacre Brow, Halewood Road, Belle Vale, Rose Brow and Woolton Hill.

There are pictures of local personalities from the past including Revd William Shepherd, Miss Janet Rodick, Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, William Hall Walker, Sir Benjamin Johnson, Miss Dorothy Nicholson and Sir Arthur Bower Forwood.

IN 2015 we began to issue our own series of A4 size booklets on specialist topics related to the Local History of Gateacre and district. The first title is
‘The Story of The Lee and Its People 1086-2012’.

Our 53-page booklet entitled ‘The Story of The Lee and its People 1086-2012’ is available as a

The booklet is based on the researches of the late Sylvia Lewis, who was the founder of the Gateacre Society in the 1970s. Ken Williams – a descendant of the Duttons of Lee Hall – has updated and illustrated Mrs Lewis’s work.

Printed copies (A4 size) are on sale at Gateacre Society meetings, price £3. They can also be supplied within the U.K. by mail order (P & P £1.50 extra).
