A SIGNPOST SAGA
The 1897 ornamental signpost in Belle Vale Road, Gateacre - erected by William Hall Walker to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee - was severely damaged in early March. The signpost toppled over while contractors were digging a hole alongside, as part of the work to replace the local gas mains. Fortunately a local resident - Mr Lucas Plunkett - had the foresight to salvage the timber and iron components and remove them to his home for safe keeping. He notified members of the Gateacre Society's Committee, and we notified the City Council's Conservation Team (the signpost being officially designated as a Grade II Listed 'Building').
The whole signpost is now being looked after by the Council's highway contractors, Enterprise-Liverpool, who will be arranging for its repair and reinstatement. We have had a site meeting with a representative of the North West Gas Alliance, and very much hope that they will be prepared to fund the work and have the sign back in place in time to celebrate our own Queen's diamond jubilee in early June!
