NO MORE HUMPS!
WHAT NEXT?
At its meeting on September 2nd (see last Newsletter) the City Council's Traffic & Highways Representation Committee decided NOT to approve the officers' plan to install traffic calming measures outside the new Aldi store in Gateacre Park Drive. They accepted the arguments put forward by local residents and ourselves that further speed bumps are not needed. The officers were asked to reconsider what problems exist in the area, and to take a look at alternative solutions. The Committee Chairman specifically asked the highways officers to work in conjunction with the local community - including the Gateacre Society - and we look forward to liaising with them in the near future.

GREEN SPACES UNDER THREAT
At a meeting on September 23rd, a Select Committee of the City Council received a progress report about the Liverpool Local Plan (a new plan for the city which will eventually supersede the UDP). Among the Appendices to this report is a long list of sites which various organisations and individuals have suggested should be designated for new uses - and among these organisations is 'LCC Physical Assets' (i.e. the Council's own property department).
We were disappointed to note that 7.62 hectares of the Former Gateacre Comp land (out of the 7.88 ha total) is on the list of suggested Residential sites. We were shocked to discover that three local open spaces - Alderman John Village Gardens, Larchwood Neighbourhood Park, and Land adjacent to Gorsewood Close - are being proposed for redesignation as 100% Residential sites, and that parts of two others - Belle Vale Park and Gateacre Recreation Ground (a.k.a. 'the cricket field' in Belle Vale Road) are also under threat.
We have been assured that none of the suggestions has as yet been accepted by the Council, and that the list of sites will be the subject of full public consultation before the Local Plan is finalised. One outcome of the meeting has been the coming-together of Green Space campaign groups from all over the city, determined to encourage the Council to view open land as a recreational asset, to be enjoyed by generations to come, rather than as a source of short-term income. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in helping with this campaign.
