GREEN SPACES REPRIEVED
On 4th September, the City Council's Cabinet will consider a report on the forthcoming Liverpool Local Plan. This recommends revising the list of Green Space sites previously proposed for housing development.
Thanks are due to all those who took part in the Council's consultation exercise (see our October 2014 , January 2015 and March 2015 Newsletters). As a result, the threat of redesignation has now been lifted from Gateacre Recreation Ground, Lyndene Recreation Ground, Larchwood Neighbourhood Park and the land opposite St Stephen's Church.
The reasons given are 'heritage constraints - nature conservation' or 'development constraints - deliverability difficult'. We are trying to find out why Alderman John Village Garden remains on the list of threatened sites.

GATEACRE COMP SITE DECISION
At its meeting on 7th July, Liverpool City Council's Planning Committee voted (by 6-2) to grant planning permission for 200 houses on the former school site in Grange Lane/Cuckoo Lane. Several local residents attended the meeting and spoke out against the plans.
A statement was read out on behalf of the Gateacre Society (subsequently published in the Gateacre Journal, and on our website) drawing attention to the failure of the applicant - and Council officers - to justify their claim that the provision of open space within the new development is 'unaffordable'. We also highlighted the fact that the Marquess of Salisbury has objected to the proposals, and is threatening to enforce his predecessor's covenants which were imposed when the land was sold to the Council - for school and playing field use - in 1946.
The planning permission will not be confirmed until a legal agreement is signed between the developers - Countryside Properties (UK) Ltd - and the Council. As part of this agreement, the developers will pay £200,000 towards the improvement of a nearby open space (still to be identified).
