NEWS FROM THE GATEACRE SOCIETY (Jan.2014):

JUBILEE SIGNPOST UPDATE

It is now well over a year since the newly-refurbished wooden direction panels on the signpost in Belle Vale Road - commemorating Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee - were taken away for the application of gold leaf to the incised lettering. The '1897' weathervane has also disappeared from the top of the signpost - which is officially designated as a 'listed building' - and we have contacted the City Council several times expressing our concern.

Now we have been told that "the panels are safe and secure in the contractors depot", and that the necessary gold leaf sheets have been kindly donated by Councillor Janet Kent - but the contractor has had difficulty finding someone skilled enough to apply the gold leaf to the wood. It is estimated that "less than a day's work" is involved.

We hope that that day will come soon!
